The Morris Chair is a predecessor to the modern-day recliner. Based on a design found in a small cabinetry shop in Sussex, England, the Morris Chair was developed and first marketed by William Morris of Morris and Company around 1866. By the early 20th century, variations to the design had found its way into the catalogs of many of the manufacturers of the Arts & Crafts Movement. Through the influence of Gustav Stickley and the American Arts and Crafts Movement, the American Morris chair took on an unsophisticated air of sturdy and reliability as opposed to the European versions which tended to be more delicate and ornate.
While adapted to many furniture styles throughout the years, several things are standard on the Morris Chair. It always features a hinged, adjustable back in varying positions. The wood framed seat and back are covered with separate cushions upholstered in fabric or leather and the Morris Chair is always built with arm rests. The popularity of the Morris Chair can be traced to one simple attribute: Comfortable!
Our Morris Chair features an 8-position adjustable back, comfortable gently curved arm rests and reversible seat and back cushions. (Leather seats have air vents and do not reverse). The Morris Chair matches our non-reclining sofas and loveseats and is offered in all our popular collections. While most popular through the years in quarter sawn white oak, it is available in any of the wood species we offer.
